✔️ The Guide to Oil to Gas Conversions

You are not alone if you have considered converting from an oil to a natural gas system. Oil prices seem to get higher and higher every year since oil prices continue to surge worldwide. So a natural gas system seems like a logical upgrade.

There are several reasons why you should convert your heater:

  • Protection against future crazy oil prices
  • Increased heating efficiency
  • Lower cost of fuel
  • Reduce carbon emissions and other greenhouse gases.

Converting your heating equipment to burning gas is better for your wallet, the environment, and your health. Learn more on how you can benefit from oil to gas conversion.

An older heater will also cost you in repair bills. Your older heating system is much more prone to failure, and you will continually need to repair it to keep it alive. This breakdown and repair cycle can become even more expensive than a new furnace, as it's not unheard of to receive a repair bill that costs as much as the unit itself!

Avoid the stress of high repair and energy bills with Tru North's replacement services. We can work with you to see if your heater or heat pump is under warranty and offer you the most cost-effective service in the market.

The Benefits of Heating with Natural Gas

Natural Gas is Cheaper

One of the best benefits is the cost. Oil these days costs about twice as much as gas. So even with the conversion cost, you will quickly break even in a few years.

The price difference is noticeable during those blistering cold winters and polar vortexes that seem to be becoming more common yearly.

Even if you consider swings in the oil price to the downside, natural gas has historically been cheaper than oil.

Natural Gas Burns Cleaner

Converting your oil heating system to natural gas is better for the environment. Natura gas is the cleanest burning nonrenewable fuel on the market.

As homeowners have become more aware of their indoor air quality, it's no surprise that natural gas heating has become more popular.

Natural Gas is More Efficient

Converting to natural gas is better for the environment. Oil heating equipment can only achieve a maximum efficiency of approximately 87 percent. But in reality, old oil heating equipment hits efficiency rates of around 70%.

In comparison, natural gas heating equipment can have a maximum efficiency rate of 98%. High-efficiency furnaces can help your home get more heat from its fuel, lowering the total lifetime costs of heating your home and reducing your carbon footprint.

🔧 The Oil to Gas Conversion Process

Converting an oil fired heating system is a simple process and can be broken down to a four-step process:

Step 1: Determine Whether You’ll Convert to Natural Gas or Propane

For most, converting from oil to natural gas is normally an easy decision. Most utility companies provide natural gas piped directly to most homes. This is the best option if you have access.

Though if you don't have access to natural gas, propane is another option. Where possible, we always recommend converting to natural gas.

Keeping propane usual takes more effort over the long run. Propane produces less heat and is more dangerous gases such as carbon monoxide. Propane shortages in the market can also affect the price, similar to dealing with oil.

Step 2. Connecting Your HVAC system to a Natural Gas Service Line

If you are connected to the local utility companies' gas line, it's really easy to set up. It's as easy as a phone call!

If you dont already have a service line, it's possible to get it installed. Your local utility company can quote the cost of a gas line installation. We can also help by advising on what needs to be done and what rebates are on offer.

There are two types of gas lines:

Main Lines: The main line pipes natural gas for your street or entire neighborhood

Service Line: This gas line connects your home to the main line.

On the occasion your home isn't already set up, you will find yourself in two situations:

  • The main line exits but no service line to your home
  • There is neither the main line nor a service line.

Most residential neighborhoods will have a main gas line. This makes installation easier. Trenching and setting a natural gas service line to your home is easier and more affordable than installing a main line.

Installing a service and a gas meter can take only a few weeks for installation. Some utility companies may provide a service line free of change.

If you live in an area with no main line, the conversion process can take much longer and will be much more expensive. This can take four to six months to install.

Although this can be shared by a neighborhood in certain cases. If you can share the cost with your neighbors, you can bring the installation cost down considerably.

Step 3. Ensure your current pipes are suitable for natural gas

You are good to go if your home is already set up for natural gas. If your home has never used natural gas before, you will need to install some piping.

These lines will be short and will connect from your gas meter to where the equipment will be installed. Other equipment that can use natural gas include a heater, clothes dryer, water heater, and kitchen stove.

Installing a natural gas line comes with considerable risk if not installed correctly. All natural gas piping should be installed by a qualified technician.

Step 4: Converting your HVAC equipment for oil to gas

Most folks convert their existing oil burning heaters to natural gas when they fail or become too expensive to fix. You will find that natural gas appliances are significantly cheaper than oil burning appliances.

Once you decide on converting to natural gas, Tru North Heating and Air can walk you through the process and help you select the most energy efficient heating system for your home.

If your existing oil burning heater is in good condition, a conversion kit is the most practical solution. It is possible to DIY an installation, though, with the risk involved, we recommend engaging licensed HVAc contractors to complete the job.

To convert an oil heater to gas, we install a natural gas burner in place of your current oil furnace. We also normally remove the oil tank to reduce the risk of fire or contamination from oil leaks.

Incentives and Manufacturer's Rebates

Many of the manufacturers in this industry provide incentives and rebates for you to buy energy-efficient equipment.  Utility companies also run national programs like Energy Star to switch you from oil to gas.

Rebates and incentives can help you offset the cost of the installation and in some cases can be in the thousands of dollars.
